چکیده

[1] A model has been developed to calculate the perturbed magnetic field at various ground-based magnetometer sites using the output of the ionospheric currents from the Lyon-Fedder-Mobarry Global MHD code. The model uses the computed ionospheric currents and the height dependence of the electrojet current above the ground, by evaluating the penetration depth of the precipitating energetic electrons, to calculate the perturbed magnetic field on the ground using Biot-Savart’s law. By applying the model to the 10 January 1997 magnetic storm event we have calculated the perturbed magnetic field for four magnetometers and compared with observations. The comparison shows reasonable agreement between observations and simulations. The model including the dependence of the current sheet height on the precipitating electron energy reduces 10% error compared to the model with fixed current sheet height. The limitations of the global MHD model in calculating perturbed ground magnetic field are also discussed.

Validation of the space weather modeling framework using groundbased magnetometers

[1] Geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) can disrupt power grid operations, causing significant interference for many people; therefore, predictions of ground-based magnetic perturbations and their time derivatives are quite important. This study quantifies how well the University of Michigan’s Global MHD code predicts approximately 150 ground-based magnetometer traces for a number of storm-...

Including gap region field‐aligned currents and magnetospheric currents in the MHD calculation of ground‐based magnetic field perturbations

[1] Many high‐latitude modeling studies utilize the horizontal ionospheric Hall current in calculating ground‐based magnetic perturbations, but low‐latitude and midlatitude studies should include current systems such as the magnetospheric, field‐aligned, and Pedersen currents. Recently, by including all these current systems, a more precise ground‐ based perturbation calculator has been impleme...

A global MHD simulation of an event with a quasi-steady northward IMF component

We show results of the Lyon-Fedder-Mobarry (LFM) global MHD simulations of an event previously examined using Iridium spacecraft observations as well as DMSP and IMAGE FUV data. The event is chosen for the steady northward IMF sustained over a three-hour period during 16 July 2000. The Iridium observations showed very weak or absent Region 2 currents in the ionosphere, which makes the event fav...

Cavities of weak magnetic field strength in the wake of FTEs: Results from global magnetospheric MHD simulations

[1] We use the global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) code BATS-R-US to model multipoint observations of Flux Transfer Event (FTE) signatures. Simulations with high spatial and temporal resolution predict that cavities of weak magnetic field strength protruding into the magnetosphere trail FTEs. These predictions are consistent with recently reported multi-point Cluster observations of traveling magn...

Modeling of 1–2 September 1859 super magnetic storm

Based on an estimated solar wind condition around 1–2 September 1859, we were able to reproduce the Carrington magnetic storm magnetometer record, with the H-component depression of 1600 nT, made at Colaba Observatory in Mumbai, India. We used an updated Dst prediction model from Temerin and Li (2002), which provides a prediction efficiency of 0.91 for 1995– 2002 interval using a fixed set of m...
